The quintet become the first women to be granted this honour since 1935 when it was awarded to Duchess of York Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and the second group of athletes after Saint Johnstone were awarded the freedom after winning the cup double.
Reacting to the news on twitter Skip Eve Muirhead said: “This is very exciting”, with Vicky Wright also reacted saying ‘Exciting News”.
The team skipped by Eve Muirhead who grew up in Highland Perthshire won gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The team scrapped though to the semi-finals after four defeats out of nine in the round robin, but advanced with other results going their way and a better draw shot challenge.
A tense and gripping semi-final followed and was won in an extra end 12-11 against Sweden, before a convincing gold medal winning performance as they swept aside Japan 10-3 in the final.
