The Atholl and Breadalbane Agricultural Show and Highland Gathering know local as the Aberfeldy Show are getting ready to return tomorrow, for their first in person show since the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Show which ran virtually during the lockdown will take place on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th of August, from 9am on both days at Wades Park.
Morag Kennedy one of the organisers of the Show and Games explains how the committee are feeling about having the games back saying: “Well It’s just great to be back. We’re really all very upbeat about it. We’ve had an amazing response to having the show back again and it means all the more to us actually because in 2022, we were able to actually purchase the show ground and since then we’ve not be able to have an event on it.
“Other organisations have used it, the rugby club, the Birks Cinema have used it for drive through cinema, but we’ve not been able to have an event ourselves. So, it means all the more just to be back again.”
The Friday sees the beginning of the Agricultural Show with Horses and Ponies on show across the day, joined by the Mounted Games and Pet Show, with the highlight of the day being the Fancy Dress on Horseback event, with this year themed around the favourite Scottish book.
Saturday sees the Highland Gathering events with Highland Dancing and Heavy Weight events taking centre stage, accompanied by races, piping and a vintage tractor display. Saturday also sees the crowd favourite event of the Carrying of the Menzies Stone, by the heavy weight athletes.
The Menzies Stone is on display year-round at Castle Menzies and historically has been used as a manhood stone for soldiers to lift, in order to join the Menzie army. The smooth ball of stone weights 115kg.
