This week sees the start of the Blair Atholl International Horse Trials at Blair Castle.

The event was cancelled last year due to COVID restrictions, and the planners are happy to welcome the event back once again.

Assistant Director for Blair Atholl International Horse Trials, Nicky Townsend said:

“This is our big week of the year. We’ve got the Land Rover Blair Castle International Horse Trials so we’re welcoming in excess of 2000 horses and riders here on site.

“Enormous entries for international riders, local riders, it’s an amazing competition we’re looking forward to and plenty of members of the public coming to enjoy the trade stands as well.

An event such as this is a massive undertaking in normal times and every base has been covered to ensure that the outdoor event is organised and put together in the best way possible. All of this work initially starts with the small team at Blair Atholl before expanding to include volunteers.

Nicky continued:

“Normally we have larger numbers. We’re operating on slightly reduced numbers due to COVID restrictions.

“We normally have up to 20,000 over a weekend on a normal basis.

“We’re a little bit smaller than usual but it’s the first time in two years we’ve been able to hold the event, so we’re really excited about it.

“There’s a huge team of volunteers who do an amazing job and they all come in.

“It’s in excess of 500 people who all come together to make this happen.

When it comes to COVID restrictions and preventative measures, all measures have been put in place to ensure the event is not only an enjoyable one but a safe one.

Nicky added:

“We’ve changed some of the structures to avoid queuing for catering units. We’ve put in additional cleaning measures for particular touchpoints and for our team members we’re encouraging them to do lateral flow tests.

“I would add for everyone to come along and enjoy a weekend in the sunshine in beautiful Blair Atholl.”
