Dunkeld and Birnam Prepares For Return of Santa Day

Dunkeld and Birnam is getting ready to welcome back its Santa Day on Saturday, the 10th of December.

After a three-year absence, the community is looking forward to the return of this much-loved Christmas event.

To raise funds for the event, the organisers are hosting a quiz night on the 11th of November at the Royal British Legion in Dunkeld, with the quiz beginning at 7:30pm.

Tables will cost £20, and teams should be made up of 4 people. A raffle will also be held at the fundraiser.

Organisers Gillian and Lachie McEwan have spoken to Heartland FM about what to expect from the Santa Day, including a walkabout juggler, a tilt walker, face painting, rickshaw rides and hair braiding.

Gillian McEwan explains, “This will be its 32nd year, and we took up the mantle just a few years ago. Our motto is: keeping the magic alive.”

There will also be a competition for the best Christmas window for local businesses where members of the public get to vote on who they think has the best display.

There will also be a Hunt the Elf event, and a Best Dressed Pet and Owner competition on the day – while eventgoers can expect an appearance from Santa and his reindeer, which Gillian McEwan describes as the day’s “biggest attraction”.

“We have a parade from the Birnam Hotel right across to Dunkeld and into the Cross. Kids get to visit Santa in the grotto that’s set up in the Drill Hall.

“We usually have round about 2000 people that come and follow Santa from the Birnam Hotel, and we have thousands of people lining the bridge and the main street in Dunkeld.”

The organisers are looking for people to help out in the lead-up to the 10th of December, and on the day itself.
