Have Your say on Keeping the River Tay Clean to Save our Ocean’s

Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB) is running an up-stream battle on the River Tay to combat litter which makes its wat into the ocean.

Around 80% of all litter in our oceans comes from rivers and that’s why KSB are looking for help from local people across Tayside to help clean up the river.

They’re looking for people from Highland Perthshire to get involved and have their say to tackle the problem at its source.

Barry Fisher, KSB’s CEO, said: “We know that 80% of marine litter comes from land and that we need to tackle this problem upstream.  Our stats also highlight that 88% of people believe that litter is a problem nationally, while 70% believe it is an issue in their local area – this is unacceptable.

“For over 30 years we have taken action to reduce marine and coastal litter and played an important role in the development of Scotland’s first Marine Litter Strategy which was published in 2014.

“The two consultations running from now until the Spring of 2022 give everyone a chance to have our say on litter – on land and at sea.  The next three months provide those frustrated by litter with a huge opportunity to have their voices heard.”

Beyond Adventure

Local water sports company Beyond adventure in Aberfeldy are getting involved too, they say that they’re getting involved is very rewarding.

Ross Dempster, from Beyond Adventure, said, “We organise litter picks quite a lot. We’ve found all sorts – beer cans, crisp packets, plastic bags and traffic cones.

“We are delighted to be part of the Upstream Battle campaign to raise awareness of litter and help to clean up our local waterway.”

There are lots of ways you can get involved from collecting citizen science to litter along the stream.
