Heartstart Discovery Hold Free Life Saving Course’s

Heartstart Discovery have announced that their free Emergency Life Support (ELS) lessons will return to Perth and Dundee in July 2022.

Heartstart Discovery are a charitable organisation, based within Ninewells Hospital,  who are aiming to educate the public on how to care for people if they take a heart attack. The free 2-hour class will take place in Perth on Saturday the 15th of July from 10am til 12pm. The class is open to everyone regardless of whether they have previous medical experience.

Heartstart Discovery coordinator, Helen Brady said: “We are delighted to be able to offer Heartstart sessions again. Emergency life support skills really do help to save lives so please consider registering for a session today. A Heartstart session could prove to be one of the most important training sessions you have ever undertaken. Please come along, you can make a difference and save a life.”

According to data released by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in January 2022, hospitals across Scotland admit 10,000 heart attack patients every year, this equates to an average of 29 different patients every single day or one person every 50 minutes.

Sessions like those ran by Heartstart Discovery are making a difference though, with 135,000 people living in Scotland today having survived a heart attack and seven in every ten people who take heart attacks in Scotland surviving them

The sessions cover:

  • caring for an unconscious person who is breathing.
  • caring for an unconscious person who is not breathing and performing CPR.
  • awareness of defibrillators.
  • how to recognise the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and how to deal with it.

The knowledge gained from the sessions will provide you with the skills you will need in order to keep a heart attack victim alive until professional help arrives.

Heartstart Discovery are also offering alternate sessions to groups, organisations and clubs.

For more information and to register for the sessions please contact Helen Brady on 01382 740400 or 07864513742. Alternatively you can contact Helen via email: helen.brady@nhs.scot or by messaging their Facebook page.
