One day remaining for Norway’s online bingo players

Bingo players in Norway have just one day to go before the government will again look over the country’s online regulations, with another extension a very realistic possibility.

With all bingo halls in the country being closed from March 12 due to the Coronavirus, Lotteritilsynet - Norway’s gambling regulator - announced that online bingo gaming would be available from March 16 to March 29.

Previously, all bingo games in Norway had to be in association with land-based bingo halls and their events. Players would only be able to take part in games online if they had registered with a land-based bingo hall in person, with independent bingo games with online only regulators still not permitted and against gambling laws.

Instead, players have now been given the opportunity to experience playing online only exclusive games for the best part of two months and it will now be interesting to see whether or not there is pressure for the laws to be altered once lockdown comes to an end.

However, it seems likely that Norway will return the rules back to normal once bingo halls reopen if recent actions are anything to go by. Updated marketing rules have ruled that online operators were not able to directly contact players through emails or text messages and online bonuses for players are prohibited too.

Players are currently able to open their online bingo accounts through the BankID electronic verification solution, but will be expected to register as usual in person once lockdown rules are eased or have their accounts closed.

The original March 29 deadline was later extended to April 13, which then became April 27 just a few days later. That deadline was then put back another two weeks to Monday May 11, which is when Lotteritilsynet will reassess the situation, though with lockdown looking set to continue another extension appears likely.
