Susan Calman’s Secret Scotland series aired an addition with her making a special visit to Blair Atholl’s, Atholl Castle, where she met with the Atholl Highlanders.

There she was given a tour of the grounds, a parade was performed and the ceremonial cannon was fired with the assistance of the Highlanders.

Regimental Sargent Major, Graham Jack, said: “Every film day brings it’s own experiences and you get to meet some very interesting people along the way.”

He described a fun filled day with him and the Highlanders trying their best to show the comedian how to perform their highly disciplined parades which use real life rifles the size which are bigger than her.

Mr Jack added: “Susan’s only four foot, eleven inches tall, so we tend to drill normally with a Lee Metford rifle with a long bayonet. Well, the rifle its self was almost as tall as Susan, but with the bayonet, of course, it was much taller than she actually was.”

He also shared a story of her firing their three pound mountain gun, after Mrs Calman announced to everyone ‘I do not do bangs, in any shape or form!’

The gun is so powerful, says the Regimental Sargent Major, that it blew out the windows of the Water Works building at Loch Katrine after the Duke of Atholl insisted that a gun salute be made when Queen Victoria opened the works.

When Mrs Calman went to fire the mighty cannon, ‘she was visibly shaking by the sound of the gun that day’ says Mr Jack.

In all, the day was a lot of fun for everyone involved, the programme aired last night on Channel 5’s ‘Susan Calman’s Secret Scotland.’
